General Surgery Residency

Aloha! On behalf of the General Surgery Residency, I sincerely welcome you to our program. The Tripler General Surgery Residency was founded in 1958 and has graduated over 200 general surgery residents. Our residency is unique from any other military program in that we are fully integrated with Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center, a full spectrum tertiary care hospital conveniently located less than one mile from Tripler. The combination of our medical centers provides the general surgery residents with an excellent surgical experience in both breadth and scope of cases.

The Tripler General Surgery Residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and is currently accredited through 2020 by the Residency Review Committee for Surgery. Each year we select four categorical interns. Each categorical intern is given a six year training contract. The residency includes five clinical years and one dedicated research year between the 2nd and 3rd clinical years. Our mission at Tripler is the education and development of safe, competent general surgeons who will enhance the surgical profession, as well as reflect favorably on Tripler Army Medical Center, the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and the community of military surgeons.

The surgical experience at Tripler is outstanding. Combined, Tripler and Kaiser generate over 5000 general and vascular surgery cases per year. Additional outside rotations include trauma at LA County/ USC Medical Center (Level 1 Trauma Center with over 4,500 trauma cases per year), transplant and hepatobiliary surgery at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, pediatric surgery at Kapiolani Women and Children’s Center, and a burn rotation at San Antonio Military Medical Center. Each of our Chief Residents graduating in 2019 had over 1,000 ACGME categorical cases and over 1,200 total cases. Tripler is also very proud to be home to a 4000 square-foot dually-accredited surgical simulation center offering state-of-the-art simulation experience.
