Tripler’s OB/GYN Department offers consultative behavioral health support through Tripler’s Behavioral Medicine Service via “Clinical Health Psychologists” providers. Health Psychologists are specialists who have advanced specialty training and credentials beyond their training as general-clinical psychologists. Health Psychologists have a primary focus of treating medical patients, helping them to have better outcomes through increasing their coping ability with their medical situations, and addressing other aspects of health that can be influenced through Behavioral Medicine. Think of it as "Performance Enhancement" for medical patients. With that, Health Psychologists often have a different approach to patient care, and utilize a “Bio-Psycho-Social” model of understanding patients. We recognize that patients experiencing a degree of mental health symptoms related to a difficult medical situation are not necessarily diagnosable as mental health patients, but as medical patients experiencing difficulty with their situation. For patients in such circumstances, we can generally provide symptom relief in 1-4 sessions. For patients who may need a higher level care in regards to their mental health, we can help coordinate referrals to more traditional types of mental health resources. If you are experiencing mental health type symptoms with your pregnancy or have other concerns that you would like to discuss with our Health Psychologists, contact your OB Team to establish a referral.
