Command Sergeant Major Timothy J. McCoy, Soldier Recovery Unit - Hawaii
Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy J. McCoy was born in Long Beach, California. He enlisted in the United States Army on May 29, 1990, and completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he trained as an Infantryman. Following Basic Training and AIT, his first assignment in the Army was an 11B Infantryman on Schofield Barracks, Hi., with the 3-21st Gimlets.
From 1997 to 2001, CSM McCoy served as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) of the Schofield Barracks Veterinary Treatment Facility, overseeing operations and providing leadership in support of military working dogs and the veterinary care mission across the installation. He served on active duty until February 6, 2001, before transitioning to the Army Reserve, where he continues to serve. CSM McCoy was inter assigned as the Operations Sergeant Major for the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from October 2021 to July 2022. Prior to that, he served in various leadership positions including Operations Sergeant Major for the 405th and 449th Civil Affairs Battalions and First Sergeant for both Headquarters and B Company, 425th Civil Affairs Battalion. His military occupational specialties include Civil Affairs (38b), Medical (68Z), and Infantry (11Z).
Throughout his military career, CSM McCoy was deployed in support of multiple operations and training missions, including Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operations Noble Eagle, Joint Task Force 160 in Guantanamo Bay, Arctic Care in Alaska, and Southwest Asia. He also participated in exercises such as Yudh Abhyas in North Carolina and training rotations at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
His military education includes the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Pre-Command Course, Medical Stability Operations Course, and multiple Noncommissioned Officer leadership courses. He has also completed specialized training such as Air Assault, Battle Staff, and Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) operations. His civilian education includes coursework at Texas A&M University, Central Texas College, and Hawaii Pacific University.
In addition to his military career, CSM McCoy served as a California Highway Patrol Officer and retired after 21 years of service. Since July 2022, he has served as the Command Sergeant Major of the 492nd Civil Affairs Battalion in Buckeye, Arizona, overseeing training, readiness, and professional development for the unit’s Soldiers.
