Today we recognize Lilibeth “Beth” Cayanan. She has been at Tripler since May of 1998 — 25 years! She has mostly worked in the operating room, but she has also ventured to plastic surgery and surgical subspecialties from 2005 to 2006. She graduated with a degree in nursing in the Philippines, but honed her nursing skills at Tripler.

Q: What inspired you to become a nurse?
A friend inspired me to become a nurse.
Q: What are five reasons to become a nurse?
- It has been a calling for me, I love that I can be there for patients when their family can’t.
- Perioperative nursing is very rewarding because most of the time we’re able to provide care that can be life changing or improve a patient’s overall health.
- It is good money.
- There are a lot of specialties that you can venture into in nursing. Whatever your passion is, you will eventually find it in nursing.
- We need more compassionate nurses
Q: What advice would you give to a student interested in becoming a nurse?
Do it for the right reason, not because someone else wants you to or you just want to make good money. This profession is like a vocation, and you have to know in your heart that this is what you want.
Q: How do you inspire future nurses?
By being positive, caring and giving my 100 percent every time. I am here for my patients, my doctors and my coworkers. I love what I do, and I hope it shows all the time.
