Transitional Year Program

The Tripler Army Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program provides a dynamic clinical learning environment with diverse opportunities for education and patient care.

Active Duty Physicians of the Uniformed Services of the United States are eligible to apply to the Tripler Army Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program.

The Tripler Army Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program is designed to fulfill the educational needs of medical school graduates who:

  • Have chosen a career specialty for which the respective program in graduate medical education has, as a prerequisite, 1 year of fundamental clinical education, which may also contain certain specific experiences for development of desired skills; or
  • Have not yet made a career choice or specialty selection and desire a broad-based year to assist them in making that decision; or
  • Are planning to serve in organizations such as the public health service or on active duty in the military as general medical officers or primary flight/undersea medicine physicians prior to completing a program in graduate medical education; or
  • Desire or need to acquire at least 1 year of fundamental clinical education prior to entering a career path that does not require broad clinical skills, such as administrative medicine or non-clinical research.
The Tripler Army Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program includes rotations at Tripler Army Medical Center, Desmond T. Doss Health Clinic, Wheeler Army Air Field Aviation Clinic, and The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Tripler Army Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program is sponsored by four Residency Programs at Tripler Army Medical Center: General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics. We also work closely with the programs to which many of our Residents are pre-selected to include Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Diagnostic Radiology, and Ophthalmology.

The Tripler Army Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program can be tailored to satisfy prerequisites for a variety of Residencies. The Tripler Army Medical Center program conforms to all the requirements of the ACGME for Transitional Year Residency Programs. Additionally, it can be modified to conform to American Osteopathic Association (AOA) requirements for Osteopathic Residents.

The academic year is divided into 13 four-week block rotations. Although rotations vary by Resident interest, a typical year includes rotations in: General Surgery, Pediatrics/Adolescent Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Family Medicine/Ambulatory Care Clinic, and inpatient Internal Medicine. Three electives can be chosen from many specialties at Tripler Army Medical Center. Residents are evaluated based on ACGME Milestones.

Transitional Year Residents are required to participate in the total care of their patients. Training in laboratory diagnosis, radiological interpretation, and pharmacological management of patients is achieved through integration on all services. Transitional Year Residents participate in all scheduled didactic activities while on rotations to include morning report, lectures, journal clubs, and M&M conferences.

Additionally, monthly Transitional Year didactic meetings cover a range of educational topics such as simulation exercises, military unique topics, patient safety, medical ethics, and professional development. All Transitional Year Residents will complete training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, and the Combat Casualty Care Course (C4).

The Transitional Year Residency Program curriculum is designed to ensure that all Transitional Year Residents meet research requirements through independent and reflective learning assignments. All Transitional Year Residents will give an oral presentation on a Patient Safety/Process Improvement topic of their choice during the year. Residents are also encouraged to seek independent research opportunities within their specialty of choice, with research rotation blocks available.
