About Us

Curriculum & Schedule

The academic program at Tripler’s Internal Medicine Program is comprised of daily, case-based morning report and academic half-day sessions which run from 0900 to 1200 on Tuesdays.

Academic half-day is delivered in both didactics and simulation. Subjects are taught by the relevant subspecialist at frequency and interval consistent with the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Blueprint. Annually, the respective services are responsible for coordinating three-hour academic sessions as follows:

  • 5 Cardiology
  • 5 Gastroenterology
  • 5 Infectious Disease
  • 5 Pulmonary
  • 4 General Internal Medicine
  • 4 Nephrology
  • 3 Critical Care
  • 3 Endocrinology
  • 3 Neurology
  • 2 Rheumatology
  • 2 Quality Improvement
  • 1 Dermatology

A Typical Intern Day

On the Wards

  • 0530 Pre-round
  • 0600 Hand-off
  • 0730 Morning Report
  • 0830 Attending Rounds
  • 1100 Work
  • 1600 Hand-off
  • 1900 Hand-off if long call (1200 for weekends and holidays)

4 day call schedule

  • Call 1 – Call 2 – Post-call – Golden Day (no new patients)

On Night Float (Intern)

  • 1900 Hand-off
  • 0600 Hand-off

In the ICU

  • 0530 Pre-round
  • 0600 Hand-off
  • 0730 Morning Report
  • 0830 Radiology Rounds
  • 0900 Attending Rounds
  • 1100 Lecture
  • 1800 Hand-off

The schedule rotates between 4-5 day shifts and 4-5 night shifts with 2-3 days off in between

In the Internal Medicine Clinic

The academic year is built around a 4+1 schedule, which means that all four-week blocks are followed by one week of ambulatory continuity clinic. The residency is broken into 5 cohorts which all have their clinic week staggered throughout the year. Residents have no other clinical responsibilities when in the clinic.
