Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program
Introduction
Welcome to Tripler Army Medical Center, the premier military health care facility in the Pacific Region. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is honored to train talented individuals who at the conclusion of residency are able to provide exemplary medical care to women.
Located on Oahu, Tripler Army Medical Center serves a diverse patient population consisting of active duty soldiers and their dependents as well as civilian patients from the Pacific Island Nations through a sponsored referral program. Tripler also serves as the tertiary referral center for Korea, Japan, Okinawa, and Guam.
Our four-year program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical Education with approval to train five residents per year level.
Program Overview
The mission of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at Tripler Army Medical Center is to train competent physicians who, at the conclusion of residency, possess the knowledge base, skill sets, and professional attributes necessary to enter practice independently, and who will contribute to the specialty through patient care, education, and research.
Our values focus on:
Teamwork
Drive
Integrity
Innovation
Competency
O’hana – Hawaiian word for Family.
We have an engaging, experienced staff dedicated to resident education in general Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Urogynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.
Our graduates are well-respected in their communities. Over the past four years, approximately 20% of our residents have pursued fellowship training. Many have returned as attending physicians to residency training programs.
Clinical Experience
Residents are exposed to a varied patient population at Tripler Army Medical Center, allowing for a diverse clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient arenas. As residents progress, they are provided opportunities for increasing responsibility with appropriate supervision. Resident-led teams are augmented by attending physicians who enjoy teaching and have a wealth of experience. Our Obstetrical Service is one of the busiest in the military. Surgical experience is innovative, offering both robotic and minimally invasive options. Three external rotations during the third and fourth years are designed to enhance surgical experience and expose residents to varied clinical practice environments.

Academics
The academic year is divided into four quarters. During each quarter, a self-study curriculum is provided that covers thirty pertinent topics. A graded exam is administered at the end of the quarter and is geared towards practice for written Obstetrics and Gynecology boards. The self-study curriculum also provides a template for staff- and resident-led lectures which are given three times weekly. In addition to the self-study curriculum, assigned reading is provided for each rotation.
Residents have protected time on Tuesday mornings for a variety of academic opportunities, including Preoperative conference, Morbidity and Mortality conference, Journal Clubs, Simulation Lab, combined OB/PEDS conference, Cadaver Lab, and guest lectures. Additional service specific conferences include Tumor Board and the Perinatal Diagnostic Conference.
Scholarly Activity
We believe that scholarly activity is a vital component of a robust residency training program, and it strengthens resident education and the ability to critically evaluate medical literature. Research is also important for those residents intending to apply for fellowship positions.
All residents are required to participate in scholarly activity and must demonstrate involvement prior to graduation. Types of scholarly activity include publications in peer-reviewed journals or textbooks; presentations of scholarly activity at local, regional, or national professional meetings; and teaching presentations.
PGY1 residents are expected to complete a case study by the end of the year. PGY2-4 residents focus on a capstone project which is presented upon completion at our annual Resident Research Day. Dedicated time for scholarly activity is provided during the Tuesday academic block, and staff mentors are readily available to assist residents in the research process.
Application Process
Fourth year medical students with a military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC, USMA) may apply to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). Applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church, VA, in addition to applying to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
For more detailed information on applying for FYGME, contact the U.S. Army Directorate of Medical Education Office at (877) 633-2769. Further information can also be found at
